Wildlife preserve planned for Korean demilitarized zone

The Associated PressPublished: June 7, 2007

TOKYO: North Korea has taken a first step toward creating a wildlife preserve in the heavily armed area dividing the Korean Peninsula, a conservation group said Thursday.

The demilitarized zone separating North and South Korea has been all but off limits to people since the fighting stopped in 1953. The result is a 240-kilometer, or 150-mile, strip of nearly pristine nature.

Environmentalists are trying to preserve the thriving ecosystem and the often rare wildlife that it shelters.

On Thursday, DMZ Forum, a U.S.-based nonprofit group campaigning to preserve the demilitarized zone, said it had agreed with the North Korean authorities to establish operations in that country and to begin a project meant to attract rare red-crowned cranes.

The small staff will work in a 7-hectare, or 17-acre, rice field north of the DMZ meant to lure the birds with fallen grain. It will also serve as a bridge with the government for future projects, like a possible assessment of critical habitat areas, DMZ Forum's interim president, Hall Healy, said at a news conference in Tokyo.

DMZ Forum is currently trying to raise the $400,000 needed to pay for the initiative, Healy said. "There is something out there worth saving," he said.

Healy declined to give additional details, citing geopolitical sensitivities in dealing with the reclusive North Korean government and its closely guarded borders.

"If we could establish an on-the-ground project in North Korea, we could establish trust, contacts and get some-on-the-ground success," Healy said.

Encompassing soaring mountains, rolling lowlands and coastal wetlands, the zone is one of the most biologically rich on the Korean Peninsula, DMZ Forum said. Hundreds of bird species spend the winter in the heavily mined area, it said, among them at least two endangered species: the white-naped and red-crowned cranes. Fifty types of mammals live in the zone, including the rare Asiatic black bear, Amur leopard and, some believe, the Siberian tiger.

South Korea's Unification Ministry said that the two Koreas began talks on Thursday to work out a deal for swapping raw materials for mineral exploration rights, The Associated Press reported from Seoul.

The two-day meeting at the North's border city of Kaesong comes a month after Seoul agreed to give Pyongyang $80 million worth of raw materials for making clothes, shoes and soap in exchange for rights to develop mineral resources in the North, the ministry said

you  are correct. Sorry for my mistake.

The crane breed in Northeast of China. There is a sentence from ICF volunteer trainning manual: "About half of the world's white-naped cranes still live in the DMZ." I dissussed it with the staff of ICF. We believe that "live" includs spending winter and stopover. Some of them stay at DMZ and then keep on migrating to Japan. Some of them spend the entire winter at DMZ.

By the way ,the cranes spend winter in China and Japan belong to different populations. There have different flyways. the cranes spending winter in China don't pass DMZ.

They told me that people only found 2 Siberian Crane of West population in Iran last year. Does it correct?

肉松不能打中文吗?

要是把在出水越冬,春秋在朝鲜半岛过境的都算,那应该有一半。

伊朗的白鹤数量很低,不足10只。去年只找到两只并不算意外。
